Get to know our 2026 Artists: Nick and Sophie

[Our wandering mistrels! Nick and Sophie are Crisp volunteers helping out wherever they can throughout the weekend, maybe cajoling friends to play too]

Hello!

We are Nick and Sophie. Fiddle music is what brought us together, and we have loved playing together ever since. Nick is from Pender Island and started playing fiddle when he was five years old, and he hasn’t stopped learning since. There used to be three fiddle teachers on Pender — Daniel, Denny and Jasmine — and Nick was taught by them all. Nick’s passion for music is channeled by him playing not only fiddle, but guitar, banjo, octave mandolin, and recently the tin whistle, as well.

He is part of the BC Fiddle Orchestra and just completed a certificate in music in Victoria, and he loves composing tunes and playing with others.

I (Sophie) grew up in Victoria and played mainly classical music in my school orchestra from age nine to eighteen. I always wanted to learn fiddle, and after years of trying to independently learn tunes from a book, I found out about the BC Fiddle Orchestra in my final few months of high school. I have embraced the fiddle style and love the freedom of playing outdoors for not only people, but the trees and animals nearby, too.



We are both passionate about nature and place deep value on protecting it, so playing outdoors is like our love song to the world. We love creating music together and sharing something with our community, and we hope to inspire others with our music. Whether you think about why a tune might have been written, or how you feel after hearing a tune, or who else in the world knows this music, we just want you to enjoy the thoughts that come to you.
